
Catechists’ First Examination
Overview
The Catechists’ First Examination is the initial stage of the official catechetical formation pathway.
It is designed to assess the candidate’s foundational knowledge of the Catholic faith and their readiness to begin formal training as a Catechist.
This examination serves as the entry point for those who wish to dedicate themselves to the ministry of religious instruction and faith formation within the Church.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to apply for the Catechists’ First Examination, the applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
- Must have sat for the G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination
- Must have obtained at least a Credit Pass in Catholicism at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L)
- Must be 18 years of age or above at the time of application
Who Should Apply?
This examination is suitable for:
- Young Catholic adults discerning a vocation to catechetical ministry
- Faithful laypersons wishing to serve as Parish Catechists
- Those who meet the eligibility criteria but have not studied Christianity at Advanced Level
Note:
In addition, recent converts to the Catholic faith, as well as applicants who do not meet the above eligibility requirements, may be permitted to sit for the Catechists’ First Examination if they successfully pass the Catechists’ Eligibility Examination conducted by the National Catechetical Centre, upon the recommendation of their Parish Priest.
Examination Structure
- The Catechists’ First Examination is a written examination
- Candidates who successfully pass this examination are eligible to proceed to the Catechists’ Intermediate Examination

Application Procedure
- Application forms are available through the candidate’s Parish
- Applications must be obtained from the Parish Priest
- A Letter of Recommendation from the Parish Priest is mandatory
- Completed applications must be submitted according to the announced deadlines
Progression Path
Upon successful completion of the Catechists’ First Examination, candidates may proceed to:
