The National Catechists’ Examination Levels provide a structured pathway for the academic, spiritual, and pastoral formation of catechists in Sri Lanka. Organised under the guidance of the National Catholic Catechetical and Biblical Centre, these levels help catechists grow progressively in knowledge, competence, and responsibility within their ministry.
The examination system is designed to support lifelong formation, recognising that catechetical service is both a vocation and a journey of continual growth in faith and understanding.
A Progressive Formation Pathway
The examination levels are arranged in three stages, each building upon the previous one. Together, they ensure that catechists are:
- Firmly grounded in Scripture and Catholic teaching
- Properly prepared to teach and accompany learners
- Spiritually formed and pastorally sensitive
- Ready to take on increasing responsibility in parish and diocesan catechetical ministry
Each level evaluates doctrinal knowledge, teaching ability, and faith witness in a manner appropriate to the catechist’s stage of formation.
Catechists’ First Examination
The First Examination introduces catechists to the essential foundations of the Catholic faith and catechetical ministry. It focuses on basic knowledge of Scripture, the Creed, Sacraments, moral life, and prayer, while encouraging the development of good teaching habits and personal spiritual discipline.
This level is intended for catechists who are beginning their formal formation journey or have recently entered catechetical service.

Catechists’ Intermediate Examination
The Intermediate Examination builds upon the foundations laid in the First Examination. It deepens the catechist’s understanding of Church teaching, Scripture, and liturgy, while placing greater emphasis on pedagogical skill, classroom practice, and pastoral awareness.
At this level, catechists are encouraged to integrate faith and teaching more consciously, becoming more confident educators and mentors within their parish communities.

Catechists’ Final Examination
The Final Examination represents the highest level of national catechetical assessment. It evaluates the catechist’s maturity in doctrine, teaching competence, spiritual life, and pastoral commitment.
Catechists who complete this level are recognised as fully formed catechists, capable of leadership, mentoring, and wider service in parish and diocesan catechetical initiatives. This level affirms the catechist’s readiness to serve as a mature witness of the faith within the Church.
