Biography

His Lordship, the Right Reverend Dr. Christian Noel Emmanuel, Bishop of Trincomalee, presently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Catholic National Commission for Catechetics, Education, and Bible Apostolate of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka. A prelate noted for his pastoral sensitivity, academic rigor, and deep commitment to catechetical and biblical renewal, His Lordship dedicates his episcopal ministry to leading the faithful to a living encounter with the Word of God.

Born on 25 December 1960, His Lordship pursued priestly formation at the National Seminary of Our Lady of Lanka, Ampitiya, and was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on 21 May 1986 for the Diocese of Trincomalee-Batticaloa. Following years of dedicated pastoral service, he proceeded to Rome for higher studies, where he obtained the Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology (S.T.D.) from the Pontifical Urban University.

Upon his return to Sri Lanka, he rendered invaluable service as Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the National Seminary, Ampitiya, and later as Rector of the Minor Seminary, Trincomalee. His leadership extended to diocesan administration, where he served as Chancellor and Vicar General, contributing significantly to the formation of clergy and the pastoral life of the Diocese.

On 3 June 2015, His Holiness Pope Francis appointed him as Bishop of Trincomalee. His episcopal consecration took place on 29 July 2015, marking the beginning of a new chapter of service to the Church in Eastern Sri Lanka. His episcopal motto, “Ut Cognoscant Te — That They May Know You” (John 17:3), reflects his enduring dedication to proclaiming the truth of Christ and fostering faith through knowledge and witness.

As Vice Chairman of the National Commission for Catechetics, Education, and Bible Apostolate, His Lordship supports the Church’s nationwide mission of catechetical formation and biblical pastoral ministry. His theological acumen and pastoral experience continue to strengthen catechetical structures, promote biblical literacy, and encourage collaboration among dioceses in the service of evangelization.
