National Catechists’ Training
The National Catechists’ Training Programme is one of the core formation ministries of the National Catholic Catechetical and Biblical Centre. Rooted in the mandate of the Church to proclaim and teach the Gospel, it seeks to empower catechists throughout Sri Lanka to be credible witnesses and effective teachers of the Catholic faith in the light of the Word of God.
Objectives
- To deepen the spiritual life of catechists and ground their ministry in prayer and the Word of God.
- To strengthen doctrinal knowledge and understanding of Catholic teaching in harmony with the Magisterium.
- To provide practical and creative pedagogical skills for effective catechesis at parish and diocesan levels.
- To promote communion among catechists from all dioceses and linguistic backgrounds.
Structure of the Programme
The National Catechists’ Training Programme is organized annually in Sinhala, Tamil, and English mediums under the guidance of the National Director and diocesan catechetical offices. Each linguistic section conducts a residential three-day formation session at a retreat or training centre. These sessions include both spiritual renewal and pedagogical development, creating an atmosphere of prayer, learning, and fraternal unity.
Formation Content
- Doctrinal Formation: Understanding Scripture, the Creed, Sacraments, and Catholic moral teaching.
- Spiritual Formation: Daily Eucharist, adoration, and guided reflection for inner renewal.
- Pedagogical Formation: Interactive methods, group work, and creative classroom techniques.
- Pastoral Awareness: Integrating catechesis with parish life and evangelization.
Methodology
The programme adopts a participatory learning approach, combining lectures, group discussions, workshops, and practical sessions. Catechists are encouraged to share their pastoral experiences, enriching the collective learning environment. Each session concludes with reflection and evaluation to ensure the effective application of the knowledge gained.
Impact and Outcomes
The National Catechists’ Training Programme continues to form hundreds of catechists annually across all twelve dioceses. Many participants have become parish-level leaders and resource persons, contributing to faith formation and pastoral initiatives throughout the country. Through this programme, the National Centre upholds its mission of building a vibrant, Scripture-rooted, and missionary Church in Sri Lanka.
