Catechists’ Final Examination

Overview

The Catechists’ Final Examination is the final and most comprehensive stage of the catechetical formation programme.
It evaluates the candidate’s theological knowledge, academic ability, and practical teaching competence, ensuring readiness for full ministry as a Catechist.

Successful completion of this examination qualifies candidates for professional teacher training and eligibility for Government Teaching Appointments, subject to prevailing regulations.


Eligibility Requirements

A candidate is eligible to apply for the Catechists’ Final Examination if they have:


Structure of the Final Examination

The Catechists’ Final Examination consists of three compulsory sections, which must be completed in the prescribed order.
A candidate must be successful in each section before proceeding to the next.


1. Written Examination

  • The written examination assesses the candidate’s advanced theological knowledge and catechetical understanding.
  • Only candidates who pass this examination may proceed to the Thesis component.

2. Thesis

Upon successfully passing the written examination:

  • The candidate is:
    • Assigned an approved thesis topic
    • Appointed a Thesis Supervisor from their Parish
Thesis Requirements

The thesis must:

  • Contain a minimum of 2,000 words
  • Be academically structured
  • Include Biblical references
  • Cite recognized academic and Church sources
  • Be original work and free from plagiarism

The candidate must successfully defend the thesis before being permitted to proceed to the Practical Examination.


3. Practical Examination

  • Candidates must demonstrate their catechetical teaching skills in a classroom setting
  • The session is:
    • Conducted as a live teaching demonstration
    • Observed and assessed by two invigilators
  • The assessment focuses on:
    • Teaching clarity
    • Faithfulness to Church teaching
    • Classroom engagement
    • Pedagogical effectiveness

Application Procedure

  • Application forms are available through the candidate’s Parish
  • Applications must be obtained from the Parish Priest
  • A Letter of Recommendation from the Parish Priest is mandatory
  • Applications must be submitted according to the official examination schedule

Post-Qualification Opportunities

Candidates who successfully complete the Catechists’ Final Examination are:

  • Eligible to register at a National Teacher Training Institute
  • Eligible to register across any National Teacher Training Colleges
